Diversity in work community from Elomatic’s perspective – The DEI Game

Diversity and DEI themes in work community evokes a wide range of emotions

Diversity and DEI in work has been much discussed in recent years in organisational and workplace debates. A diverse and inclusive workplace aims to improve people’s well-being through better and more open interaction.

DEI is also a topical theme at Elomatic, where it was noticed that the topic is not much discussed or raised in joint discussions. At the same time, there was an awareness of the topicality of the subject. The following were selected to assist in the discussions The DEI Game from Topaasia.

The DEI Game helps to address diversity and its different dimensions on a day-to-day level in workplaces, consisting of four different themes that are explored in the game: Inclusion, leadership practices, personal attitudes andprivileges.

The dei game helps to discuss

Diversity and DEI themes can be a personal issue for people. Sanni Marttinen Elomatic says that the game helped to get even passive listeners to reflect and discuss the issues. “The excitement of the game was created by the mixed crowd, how do the chemistries meet? But the game sessions went well when everyone understood the idea of dialogue: giving input and listening,” says Sanni.

When dealing with diversity for the first time in the workplace, it is good to agree on ground rules in advance, as was the case at Elomatic. Act in accordance with the basic principles of dialogue: listen, respect, wait and speak directly. This makes it possible to create a safe, shared atmosphere of trust, which allows you to deal with diversity and make use of discussion tools like Topaasia.

“The dei game was easy to use and even though we played remotely, it was easy to guide people. The game was easy to focus on and as a tool it was so smooth that it sort of ‘disappeared’ into the background of the work,” says Sanni.

Did the DEI Game help you deal with diversity and dei themes?

At Elomatic, diversity had hardly been discussed before, and the DEI game was a way to get started on the topic last spring. The theme has also been included in internal company press releases and two webinars were held on the topic in September.

“The game is not just a discussion, it is ultimately a steering wheel towards the concrete, which is what we tried to steer people towards. The result was a huge number of small actions, which we are now going through. This time the game was played with team leaders and management, but our intention is to offer the game to other staff as well in the future,” says Sanni.

The aim of the dei game is to help you identify the most important issue for improvement. On this basis, a concrete action plan will be drawn up, including the persons responsible and a timetable for its implementation. Even small things and actions can make a difference.
