Experiences of the Winning Team game

Men's volleyball championship league team Hurrikaani Loimaa (season 23–24)
Talking about things is often considered important in sport. To some extent it surely does happen. The Topaasia game, however, gives everyone the chance to be heard as equals. Talking about difficult things is also easier with the game. Playing the game has been a big factor in our team having a safe environment.
After the game the feeling was good. We got a great amount of conversation going between the team members. We thought about things in a completely different way from what we are used to on the court. Playing was found easy to use. Playing in small groups lowered the threshold for sharing opinions honestly. Often things are just stated without producing anything concrete in everyday life. In the game we reached the conclusion of picking three everyday things that we start doing today with a low threshold.
An engaging game that gets your thoughts rolling nicely. The best part of the game is listening to others’ opinions on things. It broadens your own way of thinking and teaches you to understand others’ thinking too. As a team we got concrete development points that we have been working on together. Topaasia is an excellent aid for achieving shared goals.

LP Viesti (season 2024–2025)
In August we started developing appreciative interaction skills in our team, and now we took a step forward. Kati led the game professionally and the whole team got to speak, in small groups and all together. In the game we discussed inspiring and challenging topics that matter for collaboration. The Winning Team game kept the team’s interest up throughout the session, and the conversations were good and deep. Many different views came out excellently in these conversations.
Topaasia was new to us players. It gave us a huge number of topics and took them to a deeper level than a traditional conversation might have reached. The game also relaxed the team-building situation and kept our interest to the end. Instead of a lecture, everyone got to speak in the way they preferred, either in a small group or to the whole team. The Topaasia game will surely be used by our team in the future.

Hurrikaani Loimaa (season 2024–2025)
The session was useful especially now that the team is new and the players come from many cultures. The game worked beautifully in English too, and every player was engaged well. The game also brings up things that might otherwise go undiscussed. This is an important piece of a winning team.
The team game was a good experience. We have so many new players from many different countries, so the game helped us get to know each other better. We also got to discuss the team’s values, goals and ground rules, which are important to keep in mind when a long season lies ahead.

Youth gymnastics team
The players were 17–18 year old team gymnasts, and we used this game session as part of the end-of-season debrief discussion. The cards led to very good conversations, and even the athletes who in everyday life can be a little at odds with each other were clearly on the same side in these conversations and supported each other’s comments. I was quite astonished by this.
They felt that with the game it was somewhat easier than usual to talk and tune into the topic. In their view, the cards also brought to the shared table things that would otherwise not have come to mind.
I myself felt that for a coach this was an extremely good tool. I have led team discussions a lot over the past 17 years, and in my opinion this was the most successful discussion moment of all.
“A really useful game for a team like this. It opens up a lot of conversation and opinions within the group. It makes communication and dealing with certain things easier going forward.”
“Good conversation arose and you had to think about things from many different angles.”
“It brought good conversation and kept the interest up well.”
“The game was an interesting way and tool to discuss important things. I feel we moved forward again as a team.”
“Good topics and good conversations.”
What does the Winning Team game aim for?
1
Shared understanding
The conversations help teams put into words a shared direction, goals and ground rules. When everyone knows where we are heading, genuine commitment and collaboration follow.
2
Resilience
A winning team is not measured only in moments of victory, but when things get hard. The conversations help build psychological safety and shared ways of working for challenging situations.

The Winning Team game was born from a combination of business development and sport
The game was created in content collaboration with Kati Kuoksa, an expert in interactive communication and a passionate ball games player.
“I have a 35-year background in football myself, and my family includes many volleyball players. Once I was listening to a lecture by volleyball coach Olli Kuoksa and noticed that in business and in leading a sports team, many things are shared when you want to build a winning team. That gave rise to the idea of creating the game for sports teams too, from the perspective of leading a sports team.”
When building the Winning Team deck, Kati drew on her business leadership expertise, her experience of team sports, artificial intelligence and Olli’s coaching materials.
